Positano 11/10 – Our Favorite Stop in Italy

Positano stole our hearts and easily became our favorite stop in Italy. From the water, the pastel-colored houses cascading down the cliffs are absolutely breathtaking. The town itself feels like something out of a dream. Arriving at sunset was pure magic — the city lights flickered to life one by one, reflecting across the sea in the most romantic way.

We started the night with perfectly crafted cocktails at Ocean Bar, where the service was as memorable as the views. Afterward, we headed to Positano’s iconic cave disco, Music on the Rocks, for a lively nightcap. The next morning, we wandered through charming alleys lined with boutiques and enjoyed a refreshing Sorbetto a Limone from Positano Paradise Bar (a must-try).

Capri 7.5/10 – Iconic & Glamorous

Capri is the definition of timeless Italian glamour. Seeing the Faraglioni rock formations from the water was unforgettable. It instantly reminded us of Cabo’s famous Arch. We wish we had more time to explore the hotels, bars, and restaurants overlooking this area like Hotel Punta Tragara. While cruising around Capri, the conditions weren’t in our favor to see the famous Blue Grotto, but we saw many other amazing grottos during our charter. Chartering a boat in Amalfi Coast is a must! You can browse our Italy yacht charter options here.

We anchored in Marina Grande near J.K. Place Capri (a hotel with 3 Michelin Keys we can book with VIP perks) and took the Funicular (cable car) to get to the main town of Capri just in time for a dreamy sunset. The main town of Capri is brimming with luxury boutiques and high-end shopping — everything from local artisans to global designer names. If you’d like to stay in this area of Capri, we’d recommend Hotel La Palma (another luxury hotel we can book with VIP perks). In town, we had the best gelato of the trip at Buonocore, so this cannot be missed. Then, we took a taxi back down to our catamaran, which was a memorable adventure!

Dining Recommendations in Capri

Additional Capri recommendations include lunch at La Fontelina and dinner at Ristorante Da Paolino as well as hotels like Jumeirah Capri Palace and Sina Flora that have amazing bars and restaurants, too.

Capri is best for honeymooners who want a glamorous blend of shopping, seaside dining, and iconic Italian scenery. We didn’t have time for as much as we wanted, including the Anacapri chairlift — so we’ll have to return!

Amalfi 6/10 – Prettier from the Water

Amalfi is one of the coast’s most famous towns, but to us, it felt more beautiful from the water than on land. While the colorful façade of Amalfi town rising against the cliffs is stunning at first glance, walking the streets revealed a side that felt crowded, tourist-heavy, and less polished than we expected.

That said, there are gems worth noting. Lo Smeraldino, a charming seafood spot right in the port, delivered a delicious meal with views that softened our impression. For those seeking a quieter, elevated experience, the trip up to Ravello is highly recommended. Staying or dining at Caruso, A Belmond Hotel offers panoramic views, serene gardens, and a level of sophistication Amalfi itself struggles to capture. Where to Stay in Amalfi

Amalfi is best for a quick stop on your yacht charter or as a base if you plan to venture into Ravello and other nearby destinations for a more refined Amalfi Coast experience.

We’re sure the beach clubs are nice, but we imagine it would be extremely hot to sit on the rocks, even during our visit in September. Overall, the town of Amalfi was prettier from the water, so we're not sure if we’ll return here since there is so much more to explore in Italy, but it would be worth giving Ravello a visit!

Rome 10/10 – History & Romance

Rome is where history and romance collide. Even with only 24 hours (and Richie under the weather for half of it), the Eternal City managed to sweep us away.

Our stay at FH55 Grand Hotel Palatino Roma was a perfect choice for location — closest to the Colosseum (where we found an amazing photo spot) and walkable to many major historical landmarks. We also recommend staying at the Palazzo Manfredi Hotel and enjoying cocktails at The Court, which comes with jaw-dropping views of the Colosseum. Dining & Sightseeing in Rome

Dinner at Tre Scalini in Piazza Navona was a personal highlight (and a family tradition – my mom’s favorite restaurant for lasagna). Everything we ate and drank there was delicious. My DIY walking tour on Day 2 took us past Rome’s most iconic landmarks in one unforgettable loop, including the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain (remember to stand with your back to the fountain and throw the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder so you'll return to Rome!), St. Ignatius Church, Pantheon, plus pizza and gelato along the way.

Leaving Rome, our private transfer included stops at Saint Peter’s Basilica and Passeggiata del Gianicolo for sweeping city views. The FCO airport is nice, and you can bring water through security! However, you can’t go to different terminals without clearing customs, which we discovered (twice) on the hunt for an airport lounge. Luckily, we ended up finding Priority Pass lounges in our terminal.

Rome is best for couples who want to combine luxury, food, and history into a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Highly recommend spending 3-5 days in Rome during your trip to Italy!

We learned the hard way that less than 24 hours in a destination is not the proper way to travel, which was reinforced by Richie's unexpected illness. We think it was caused by eating a bad clam. While convenient, we were overcharged with a €350 doctor visit to our hotel (originally quoted €200). Luckily, Richie got the prescription medications he needed and started to get better in 48 hours since Paris was our next 24-hour travel stop! Pro tip: always purchase travel insurance, and we're happy to provide a quote for you.

Naples 1/10 – Skip If You Can

Naples was our least favorite stop in Italy, and honestly, we’d recommend skipping it if possible. The airport was crowded and dirty, the taxi ride to the train station was chaotic, and our experience at the train station was both confusing and stressful. While the food and wine we had upstairs at the train station’s restaurant were decent, the overall Naples vibe was unwelcoming — with some of the rudest service we’ve ever experienced. It was not a warm welcome to Italy like we experienced in Greece. Our train was delayed, and we almost missed it, so we’re thankful we figured it out just in time. If you’re heading to the Amalfi Coast, opt for a private transfer straight from the airport to your destination instead of passing through Naples. It’s worth the investment for a smoother, more luxurious arrival.

Salerno 3/10 – Charter Starting Point

Salerno served primarily as the starting point for our catamaran charter. While we didn’t explore the town, the marina was extremely modern and well-kept, which made for a smooth and enjoyable embarkation. Our captain, Eugenio, even mentioned that the coastline south of Salerno offers a less crowded alternative route, which could be worth exploring on a future trip.

Catamaran Experience 8/10 – The Best Way to See the Amalfi Coast

Chartering a catamaran was the best decision for our first Amalfi Coast trip — our only regret was not booking more than 3 nights. The yacht was spacious, beautifully designed, and the perfect floating home base. We loved cruising between coves, stopping for swims and paddleboarding, then lingering over leisurely lunches on deck with local ingredients.

Sailing is an incredible way to take in the coastline, but transits took longer than expected, and each port had its own rules for going in and out. Positano had the smoothest system: we called the dinghy, they whisked us ashore (until 3 AM!), and all they needed was our yacht’s name. Capri’s transfer was friendly but less polished, which made logistics a bit trickier. In Amalfi, we docked in the marina and walked a plank on/off — another interesting adventure. Our captain spoke limited English, which added some complexity, but he made excellent limoncello! Overall, it was a fantastic experience — we’ll share a full catamaran guide soon. Bonus: Sorrento

If you don’t plan to charter a yacht or catamaran, another amazing city to stay in would be Sorrento, with easy ferry access to the main Amalfi Coast destinations. While we can’t give a proper ranking since we skipped Sorrento this trip, we would recommend staying at Parco dei Principi Hotel with VIP perks including complimentary daily breakfast, early check-in/late check-out, and top of the list for a room upgrade.

Our verdict? Italy lived up to the romance, history, and beauty we dreamed about. Positano was the star of the trip, Capri deserves a proper trip back, and Rome reminded us why it’s one of the world’s greatest cities. Amalfi and Naples didn’t quite meet expectations, but that’s the beauty of travel — every destination brings a new story.

The best way to experience the Amalfi Coast is by combining a yacht charter or catamaran charter with a few nights at a luxury resort in Positano, Capri, and possibly Sorrento. If you're taking trains in Italy, make sure you're tracking your train on the Trenitalia app and checking email for any schedule changes. Honestly, the best thing to do is wait by the train-board tracker and watch your train since schedules and platforms change frequently. The most surprising thing was no one ever checked our ticket on the train from Naples to Salerno (a ~35 minute ride), but they did from Salerno to Rome (a ~1 hour 45 minute ride). Also, PLEASE don't overpack, since lugging everything around in Europe is less than ideal (you can see what we mean here).
