Wedding Day Getting Ready Tips!

Are you thinking about getting your hair & makeup professionally done on your wedding day? If you are in the wedding planning process, you know how much detail goes into every decision leading up to your special day. This includes getting ready on your wedding day, so I wanted to share my tips!

I personally loved the wedding planning process, but I also love to plan & be organized. Because of this, I had a perfect plan for the day, but not everything can always go as planned! Popping the champagne worked out nicely, though ;)

So, what went wrong on the day of our wedding? The getting ready part. And I was the only source of the drama lol.

I had never gotten my makeup done before, but everyone (& many articles I read) suggested getting it done for wedding pictures. I did not get a hair & makeup trail for a few reasons: 1) I didn’t want to waste time doing that in Cabo and 2) something my Maid of Honor reminded me of, is that your trial probably won’t even be the same as the day of the wedding. So, you might be thinking I took a risk not getting a trial, but how bad could it be, right? I still don’t regret not getting a trail, I only regret getting my makeup in the first place. If you don’t typically wear a lot of makeup, I highly recommend doing your makeup yourself, especially if you want to look like yourself on your wedding day!

I got my hair done as well and luckily that turned out fine (not what I wanted/showed them pictures of, but it looked good). I've worn hair extensions for YEARS & buying them from Zala has been the best! I can't believe how well they held the curls all day & night. I buy the honey beach highlights color & it matches my highlighted hair perfectly, which has been hard to do in the past.

Getting my makeup done was a disaster because it was crackling off of my face within minutes. It was so gross to me, so I wiped everything off & basically redid my makeup myself. This set me back on time, which was also super stressful because it is important to stick to your wedding timeline! I was so upset in the moment, & as I reflect back on this, I wish I could have stopped crying about it earlier, but there are so many emotions/different things going on during the day, sometimes it can be hard to stop crying, even if you really want to! This was basically the only time I cried though on our wedding day, so at least I got it out of the way early?! I am so thankful for everyone’s support – my mom, best friend & her mom, mother-in-law, cousins, friends, & my now sisters, AND our photographer & wedding planner! They were all so comforting and helped turn my frown upside down the rest of the day!

Can you tell my hair is fake!? I highly recommend Zala!

During the wedding day getting ready session, I didn't drink much, but having a glass of champagne definitely helped me get over what happened to my face lol. In regards to drinking while you are getting ready for your wedding day, my best advice is to know your limits! You don’t want to overdo it too early (it’s a long day so try to stick to no more than 1 drink per hour), & drink lots of water, especially at a destination or summer wedding! You can always drink more alcohol later on, but remember you’ll need to be communicating with your vendors, and if you have a photographer and/or videographer, keep in mind they are documenting everything you do :) You can read more about our amazing wedding vendors here and tips for prioritizing your wedding budget & vendors here. If you are having a destination wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, like we did, we cannot recommend all of them enough.

In the moment of my wedding makeup dilemma, it was really hard for me to stop being upset, but I did NOT let it ruin my day. One thing I always kept in mind throughout wedding planning, especially through the stressful times, is that you can’t let things get to you too much! The whole point of the day is to marry the person you love & want to spend the rest of your life with, and to celebrate this special moment with your closest friends & family.

If you are a bride-to-be who loves wearing makeup/getting it done, then go for it! And if you are more like me, then I highly advise doing at least your makeup yourself! You will look beautiful either way! And whatever wedding hiccup happens during your special day, don't stress too much because I promise, it will all work out!
